Artists Statement

Peter Walker is a sculptor of sensitivity and precision.

He combines a talent for creating unique and powerful artworks with a knowledge and dedication to re-establish the traditions of his art form, an undertaking that is bringing him much acclaim. Peter initially trained in figurative sculpture under the tutorship of anatomist Elenor Crook RA and Sculptors Mr. Andrew Edwards (Public Sculptor) and Mr. Neil Wood M.A.

The outcome of this study has enabled Peter to not only to produce sculptural works for commission or for private and public commercial means, but also with the abilities to mould, cast and patina finished work.

Thus giving the artist a broad knowledge and insight of his subject. Along side his professional practice, Peter continues to strengthen his artistic development primarily through self directed studies in the areas of anatomy, osteology and physiognomy.

There is a comfortable dichotomy that can be viewed in the work that Walker produces. A balanced and yet immeasurable polarization. A desire to look in two directions, along the lines of traditional sculpture and to explore the themes of a personal subtractive outlook.

Movement, structure and the translation of human emotion are visible influences upon his current body of work. The development of a cohesive language, which takes into account consistent themes, underpins that which the artist attempts to convey.

It is only within the questions that are asked that the direction of a resultant work is dictated. Different questions (subjects) require different discussions (approaches) thus resulting in individual conclusions (the finished work).

"It is only with arduous and particular study and continual observation that we are able to create something individual".

Icarus
Wax Model For Bronze Edition (Ed: 8)
P.O.A

The sculpture of Icarus is one of the most instantly compelling works in Walkers current portfolio. The work places the figure of Icarus as he "basks in the adulation of his glory", however this point is also the instance just before the success of his flight is ended by that to which he is attracted.

Like a moth to a light bulb, that to which we attach reverence may not fulfil our expectations. This sculpture combines many of the elements essential within Walkers work. The use of anatomical accuracy infiltrated by abstraction and the manipulation of form being evident.

Project for a Crucifixion
Wax model for Bronze Edition (Ed: 8)
P.O.A

This simple freestanding relief design encompasses the use of an abstracted anatomical form as its central or focal point.
As with many of his works the human figure is used within a larger
sculptural composition in a pictorial manner, the assembling of structural
form being apparent.
The consideration within this work is directed towards the moment when the self is released from its attachment and the ascension begins. Produced as a maquette for a larger work, the work is shown as a bronze
statuette in its own right.

Sir Izaac Walton Memorial Statue
Public Commission
Victoria Park / Stafford
Bronze
9 feet

This public work is one of the most significant monuments in Stafford.

It was erected in September 2000 by Lord Illiffe and is a demonstration of Walkers adaptability in the sculptural arena. Indeed Peters work has increased awareness of the role that public art can play in a community.

Private Commission

Plaster Portraiture and the production of portrait sculpture to commission, is a major part of Walkers sculptural practise. This sculpture was the first life size portrait that was ever made by Walker!
The commissioner now cherishes it.

Study Sixteen (After Antoine Louis Barye)
Charcoal, Pencil & Conte on Paper
£185

Walker's portfolio consists of a large number of drawings taken from his extensive study of the master artists of his subject.

The art of drawing is fundamental in the development of the sculptural language, with consistent exercise in the discipline helping to develop a sensitivity to line, and an in depth understanding of form and moreover of physical mass.

Drawings such as this beautiful study, which is executed in a traditional technique demonstrate the finest qualities in this most difficult and underused art form.
